Walking through the historic piazzas of Verona Italy, it’s hard not to think of love and romance, partly because of the allure of the city’s Shakespearean connection to Romeo and Juliet, but once you dig deep into this beautiful city you can feel the charm of the Adige river that weaves all around the city, you can experience the heart-warming operatic tones of Verdi and Puccini, you can see couples sharing candlelit dinners in medieval alleys. While historians believe it was unlikely that Shakespeare visited Verona, he borrowed the idea of Verona, a city of romance and cultural sophistication, to give his tragedy a glamorous appeal that would delight his English audience.
It was in Verona that I learned of the expression mezza mela or half an apple; In Italy, calling a partner a mezza mela implies that when two soulmates find each other, they make the apple whole. If I assigned this metaphor to a place, the two half-apples in this city would be Piazza Bra and Piazza Delle Erba.
Piazza Bra is famous for its markets, yes, but in its center is the Arena De Verona, the third largest amphitheater in the Roman world dating from the first century AD, known for its amazing acoustics and still retaining most of its original stone.
Piazza Bra is connected to Piazza della Erbe by way of Via Mazzini, Verona’s most stylish pedestrian street that will dazzle your senses with its marble walkways and high-end boutiques.
Erbe is Verona's market square where vendors come to sell whatever's in season. Its pastel buildings are a delight to view during the day, and lit up at night it becomes simply magical. The Renaissance nobles who followed their Venetian forefathers here showed off their palaces not with statues but with finely painted facades, and by the 16th century Verona had become known as "the painted city". One building that still remains with these timeless frescoes is currently for sale
There's a property I'm going to show you here in Verona that you simply will not believe. You can see here that the magnificent panoramic terrace offers breathtaking views of Piazza delle Erbe and some of Verona’s most iconic monuments.
It's perhaps an overused expression in Italy that you are buying a piece of history when you are buying here; however in this case, it's an understatement.
